Just north of Charleston
is the 66,267 acres of Cape Romain National Wildlife
Refuge are composed of 3 bays, barrier islands, rivers,
salt marshes and maritime forest. You can spend time hiking
on Bull Island where you will find the one-mile Middens
Trail and the two-mile Turkey Walk Trail.
Bull Island is renowned for being home to over 277 species of birds which can be seen year round on its impoundments and beaches. Or, you may choose to go boating on the many miles of tidal creeks. As you drift along you will see birds, deer, alligators and hundreds of species of wildlife. The water is home to fish, shrimp, crabs, and the beach provides refuge for the loggerhead turtles. As you stroll the beaches you may find an assortment of shells. You might find a sand dollar, a whelk, an olive, an angel wing or many other shells.
You can go fish the saltwater bays and creeks and catch spottail bass, spotted seatrout, flounder, sheepshead and black drum year-round. You can also go shrimping, crabbing or harvesting oysters and clams when in season, which is typically September through May.
