Colonial Dorchester Visitors Guide
Located just outside of Charleston, the Colonial Dorchester State Historic
Site preserves the location of the 1697 trading village,
Dorchester. This archeological site is the nation’s best
preserved example of a fort built from tabby, an oyster shell
concrete used on many structures along the Southeastern
coast. You will also see the brick bell tower of St. George’s
Anglican Church and part of a log wharf that's is visible during
low tide. There is also an interpretive trail which tells
the history of the village and the progression of discovery
through archaeological and historical research.
