Fort Moultrie National Park Visitors Guide

Just outside of Charleston is Fort Moultrie, a unit of Fort Sumter. Here you will find more than 170 years of sea defense history. Built in 1809, the site’s third fort structure was active until WWII. The original fort was made of palmetto logs which withstood British artillery in 1776. The use of the palmetto is where South Carolina gets the nickname, “the Palmetto State." As you enter its gates, you will travel back in time from a World War II Harbor Entrance Control Post to the palmetto log fort of 1776. While at Fort Moultrie you can watch a 20 minute film and see where Cherokee Indian Chief Osceola was held captive.
