Francis Marion and Sumter National Forest
Named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion (aka Swamp Fox) this
600,000 acre forest parallels the Intracoastal Waterway
for almost 40 miles north of Charleston. The forest is a
great place to get back to nature as you can go hiking,
fishing, hunting, horseback riding, white water rafting,
biking, boating, canoeing, and bird watching. You may choose
to take part in nature studies or get some great photos
of the 15 waterfalls in the Andrew Pickens District of the
Sumter National Forest. There are numerous picnic facilities,
tent sites and full hook up sites available. Reservations
are recommended (877-444-6777).
There are many outdoor attractions at the park. You can visit the wetland habitat of the Carolina Bay, the wild and scenic Chatooga River which spans the Eliot Rock Wilderness, paddle the picturesque 9 mile Wambaw Creek Wilderness Canoe Trail, see the phenomenal view from atop the Oscar Wiggington Scenic Overlook or go to Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center (5821 Highway 17 North Awendaw, SC or call (843) 928-3368 open Tues.-Sat. 9 AM - 5 PM for hands on interpretive displays). Here you will learn about the region's ecosystem, see a live red wolf display or hike the nature trail.
