The Wine Country of Oregon
Oregon tourism offers many decadent experiences, but one of its best is found along the winding country roads of Interstate 5. Although, Oregon was not originally viewed by horticulturalist as wine country, today there are more than 250 wineries in 7 growing regions across the state. Matter of fact, Oregon is second only to California in the number of wineries. In addition, Oregon wines have won a long list of international medals.
As you plan your Oregon wine country tour, consider a trip during mid-October through the third week of November. During this timeframe, many Willamette Valley wineries are part of the Oregon Bounty Association and offer wine tours and tastings as well as the opportunity to sample regional food products such as pears, hazelnuts and cheese.
Oregon’s seven wine regions are: Mt. Hood territory, Yamhill valley, Marion County, Benton County, Linn County, and Lane County. Within these regions there are 520 growers, 170 of which are associated with wineries.
There are 13,400 acres of grapes with the Majority of the acreage in Yamhill Valley. With the cool climate of the Oregon valleys there is an abundance of Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.
Some of the Winners along Interstate 5, which are a must for any wine tour, are:
- Valley View Winery (Applegate valley)—One of Oregon’s oldest and most awarded wineries. Their wines are bottled under the Anna Maria label and include Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Henry Estate Winery (Umpqua Valley) – The trellis system used here was developed by owner Scott Henry and is used today world-wide. It is famous for its Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, Gewürztraminer, White Riesling and Muller Thurgau wines.
- Eden Valley Winery & Rogue Valley Wine Center (Rouge Valley) -- This beautiful winery is listed on the National Historic Register. It’s featured wines include Tempeanillo, Calo Franc, Syrah, and Chardonnay
